Managing as a Coach

Leadership and management responsibilities have changed, particularly in the last decade. In this course, you will gain an understanding of why coaching has become an essential skill for managers, and learn to differentiate between coaching, managing, mentoring, leading and training so that you know when each role will be most effective.
You will be able to describe your current point of view as a leader, and evaluate when to adjust your thinking in order to be more effective in managing and leading in a rapidly evolving workplace.

Setting Expectations & Assessing Performance Issues

Setting clear expectations and establishing accountability are the core responsibility of mangers. In this course you will explore how to collaboratively develop expectations, assess performance against expectations, and when expectations are not met, how to determine the underlying issues that are impeding performance.
Mangers need to be able to diagnose why a performance gap exists. In this course, you will learn a method for discerning the root cause of poor performance, and how to respond as a manger-coach to different types of performance issues to help your staff improve and excel.

In this course, you will explore the coaching practices managers use to create a culture of accountability. You will learn the underlying principles of coaching as a manager, and the elements for establishing a consistent, effective one-on one-coaching relationship with those you manage. You will review common performance scenarios managers’ face, learn to determine the causes of poor performance and practice developing a coaching response.

In this class you will deepen your understanding of the essential practice of coaching conversations. We will explore in depth how to prepare for and communicate as a coach in different types of coaching conversations— with top performers, with those who have performance gaps, and those who are difficult or non-performing. You will watch videos of each type of conversation to observe ideal, and less than ideal, coaching conversations.
Capstone: Designing and Implementing Your Coaching Strategy

By the end of this Capstone, you will have a coaching strategy as well as the tools you will to confidently introduce coaching to your team. You will use the leadership point of view developed in Course 1 to articulate your coaching philosophy, and produce clearly defined expectations for each person on your team, as well as Key Performance Indicators you will use to evaluate performance, building on your work from Course 2. You will use the techniques learned in Courses 3 to prepare for and practice coaching conversations, and use what you have learned to provide feedback to your other colleagues in the Capstone course. The top students in the Capstone course will have an opportunity to have their coaching plans reviewed by a certified coach.
